Mother bear and cub hanging out in tree in Monrovia backyard

Wildlife officials Wednesday evening were continuing to monitor a mother bear and her cub after the pair climbed a tree in Monrovia.

Janice Mackey, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said wardens would not tranquilize the mother bear because the cub was too young and still nursing.

A warden was at the home, in the 200 block of East Olive Avenue, ready to guide the bears into the foothills.

“Hopefully the bears will wander back to where they came from,” Mackey said.

John Gonzalez, a nearby resident, said he was surprised to see the bears in the neighborhood.

“This is a densely populated area with a lot of families,” Gonzalez said. “It seems like we see it once or twice a month on the news.”
