A 36-year-old mother of three school age children was killed Tuesday night when a man suspected of drunk driving collided with her van in Mission Viejo.

Deputies responded to a call at 11:40 p.m. after a black and red Ford 250 truck traveling the wrong way on Santa Margarita Parkway collided head-on with a white Toyota Sienna van, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, identified as William Carroll, 42, of Mission Viejo, attempted to turn onto the southbound lanes of the street, but turned onto the northbound lanes.

He suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Mission Hospital.

The driver of the van, Ana Martinez, 36, of Trabuco Canyon, was pronounced dead at the scene. Amormino said that Martinez is the mother of three children who range in age from 7 to 14.

Because of the man’s condition, investigators were not able to conduct a field sobriety test, but detected signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol, Amormino said.

The accident is under investigation.
