Despite arrest, San Diego police still hunt attacker in North Park

When San Diego police this week announced the arrest of a suspect in a string of late-night attacks on women in North Park, residents of the neighborhood expressed relief.

But on Friday, police said that the suspect, David Drake, 23, has been cleared in one of the six attacks, suggesting that there was another attacker, maybe two, preying on women in the area.

Police said Drake had been cleared in a June 17 attack in which two men confronted a woman walking alone around 11:30 p.m. She fought back and the men fled, police said.

“As of today, there are no new leads in this assault,” police said.

Meanwhile, Drake remains in jail in lieu of $5 million bail. According to jail records, Drake faces 23 felony counts, including multiple charges of assault and attempted rape.

In the five alleged assaults with which Drake is charged, the women “sustained significant injuries” to their faces, police said. Two of the women were knocked unconscious.
