Man fatally shot in Pomona targeted by rival gang, police say
A 23-year-old man who police say was fatally shot by rival gang members in Pomona was first targeted last month in a shooting that wounded a 14-year-old girl, police said.
Pomona police identified Tuesday night’s victim as Fred Anthony Aguirre, of Pomona. Aguirre was killed about 6 p.m. when he was gunned down near the intersection of Rebecca and Center streets, about half a mile from the Pomona Police Department.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that Aguirre was specifically targeted in this incident and this was not a random act of violence,” said Sgt. Patrick O’Malley in a news release.
Aguirre also was the target of a Nov. 20 attack that wounded a 14-year-old girl instead, police said. She survived and has since been released from the hospital.
Aguirre’s killing was the second shooting in Pomona in two hours Tuesday. About 4 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot near South Gibbs and East 7th streets, less than half a mile from the police station. He is listed in stable condition.
Pomona Lt. Eddie Vazquez said it appeared both shootings were gang-related, but were unrelated to each other.
