Light rain, thunderstorms could hit L.A. today
Yes, Los Angeles, that mist on your windshield is what you think it is.
National Weather Service officials on Sunday confirmed a 20% chance of rain along the coast and valley regions of the county. There’s even a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms in the mountain and desert regions that could dump as much as a half-inch of rain onto the Southland by Sunday evening, said meteorologist David Sweet.
But don’t get too excited. Sweet said much of the rain, if it arrives, will be in such trace amounts it won’t be measurable.
“You can accept that it’s real and not your imagination,” he said.
A low-pressure system moving north out of the region is responsible for some low clouds and the chance of light showers, Sweet said. But that system will have exited the area by Sunday afternoon and any potential rain will have fallen by the evening, he said.
When downtown received a trace amount of rain Saturday, Sweet said the total rainfall since the beginning of the year edged up to 5.11 inches. That’s less than half the 10.62 inches Sweet classified as “normal” for this time of year.
“We continue to fall further and further behind,” he said.
Even with Sunday’s possible drizzles, locals should expect highs up to about 80 degrees downtown.
The next week, Sweet said, will be even warmer as an area of high pressure moves in. Highs Thursday through Saturday could reach the 90s inland and downtown.
