Ferry crashes at San Francisco pier, injuring 10 passengers

A San Francisco ferry carrying hundreds of passengers to Oakland hit a harbor piling in San Francisco on Sunday, injuring children and adults as they tumbled, including one who suffered a gash over his eye.

The accident occurred about 5:45 p.m. at Pier 41 when the Ferry Peralta operated by Blue and Gold Fleet backed into a wooden piling jutting out of the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

“It just hit a piling. I saw like, kids fly. It was pretty bad,” witness Darryl Pham told KGO.

There were more than 200 people aboard the ferry when it crashed, according to local media reports.

Ten people suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized for evaluation, the Coast Guard reported. The Peralta was taken out of service as part of the investigation.

The cause of the crash has been determined not to be mechanical and so the investigation is now focused on the crew, ABC News reported.

Blue and Gold Fleet, meanwhile, has been apologetic, Richard Ricks told KGO. His nephew suffered a gash over his eye as a result of the collision.

“The people have come forth and they’ve rendered apologies, and they’re doing everything they can to comfort us, so we’re appreciative of that,” he said.
