Straight couple weds in West Hollywood to be ‘part of history’

Same-sex couples weren’t the only ones gathered Monday in West Hollywood, where many were celebrating the resumption of gay marriages in California.

Chanel Ross, 23, and Jose Pascay Gomez, 21, arrived with their two children, 3-year-old Antonio and 7-month-old Monica.
“We always wanted to get married,” Ross said. “We thought this would be the perfect opportunity.”

They had originally planned to marry later this month, and Ross already had her dress -- white with a purple sash.

“Purple’s my favorite color. I got the perfect one,” she said.

She said she was happy that her anniversary would mark another important day.

“It also helps to celebrate, to let them know they’re as equal as us as well,” Ross said. “Just because they’re gay doesn’t mean they’re different.”

Her groom agreed: “I’m glad we were made part of history.”

The city of West Hollywood waived fees on marriage ceremonies performed in its council chambers during a six-hour stretch Monday.

Mayor Abbe Land, City Council members and other officials were temporarily sworn in to help officiate at the weddings.

“It’s just a joyous day,” Land said. “It’s such a privilege to be able to officiate these marriages. Every person that’s getting married, you can tell how special it is.”

“It’s nice when you get to do something that’s filled with love,” Land said.
