Fontana boy, 17, arrested on suspicion of trying to kill family

Fontana teen accused of trying to kill family by setting house on fire

A teenager was arrested Monday in Fontana on suspicion of trying to kill his family by burning down their home.

The 17-year-old boy allegedly put several layers of paper on the kitchen stove and ignited the burners while his mother and at least one other person were sleeping, said Lt. Gary Aulis of the Fontana Police Department.

"He said he set the fire to kill his family," Aulis said.

Officers arrived at the home in the 7900 block of Tokay Avenue about 3:30 a.m. and detained the boy.

The teen was booked at Juvenile Hall after undergoing a mental health evaluation, Aulis said.

Police did not release his name because he is a minor.
