UCLA suspends water polo player accused of raping student
A UCLA freshman water polo player has been suspended from the university after he was arrested on suspicion of raping a female student.
Hakop Jack Kaplanyan, a red shirt freshman, was arrested Wednesday. By Monday, he was out of jail on $200,000 bail.
He is due in court to face charges April 25.
University officials did not release many details about the alleged incident.
In a statement they said Kaplanyan, 18, an undeclared freshman from Glendale, “has been suspended from the university, subject to an appeal.” The incident remains under investigation.
A female student reported that Kaplanyan, who was an acquittance, had raped her inside his residence hall, said Nancy Greenstein, UCLA Police Department spokeswoman.
She reported the attack to police late on April 2, and Kaplanyan was arrested without incident.
According to his profile on the UCLA Athletics site, Kaplanyan played at Hoover High School and was a three-time first team All-CIF selection and was twice named league most valuable player before joining the UCLA water polo team. As a sophomore in 2009, he set what was then the CIF single-season record of 229 goals.
