A gang member is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday for killing a woman in a car then dumping her body on the side of the road while leading police on a chase.

Juan Diego Valencia, 30, was convicted of killing Selene Mayoral, 24, on Sept. 6, 2012, on Alma Avenue in Lynwood and, during a police pursuit, pushing her body out of a green Mercury Cougar.

A deputy tried to stop the car for a routine traffic stop when the deputy saw a flash and heard a gunshot coming from inside the car, which then bolted from the scene and sped off. Mayoral was killed by a single gunshot wound.

Valencia was arrested the next morning after barricading himself in an apartment in Hawthorne at the end of the chase. He eventually surrendered after Special Enforcement deputies and a crisis negotiation team were brought in. He faces life in prison.
