Warm weather, Santa Ana winds forecast for L.A. by the weekend

Southern California is in for another spring warm-up.

Temperatures in the 80s and 90s, along with gusty northeasterly Santa Ana winds, are expected to hit the region Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The wind, warm weather and dry air mass that will settle over the area are expected to increase the wildfire danger in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the Weather Service said. High temperatures could approach record levels.

“Temperatures exceeding 100 degrees cannot be ruled out,” the agency said in a statement.

Relative humidities could drop to the single digits, the Weather Service said, and the winds will probably be moderate to strong.

The agency said the warm-up is expected to last from Sunday through Wednesday and will be caused by high pressure that will blow across the desert and create a dry, off-shore flow.

Last week, Santa Ana winds and highs in the 90s created havoc for hundreds of firefighters battling a wildfire that broke out in the San Bernardino Mountains near Rancho Cucamonga. The blaze, which was sparked by an illegal campfire, charred more than 2,100 acres, the U.S. Forest Service said.

On Thursday night, low pressure was keeping Los Angeles temperatures cool and causing gusty northwest winds to blow across the region. Temperatures ranged from 59 in Torrance and Playa del Rey to 62 in Downey and Yorba Linda. The low pressure will continue through Friday, according to the Weather Service.
