Woman stabbed to death in South Whittier

Authorities are investigating the fatal stabbing of a woman in unincorporated South Whittier.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department received a call at about 10:30 p.m. Friday of a “woman down” in the 11500 block of Obert Avenue, according to a department news release. When officers arrived they found paramedics treating the woman for multiple stab wounds.

The woman, who was not been identified, was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s statement.

A witness told deputies that a female approached the victim and the two engaged in an argument. The verbal confrontation escalated into a physical altercation.

During the fight, the witness said, the other female pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman several times, according to the sheriff’s statement. The female with the knife then fled.

Deputies later detained a female believed to be involved in the incident, officials said. She was being held at the Norwalk sheriff’s station pending further investigation.

No arrests have been made at this time.

There has been one homicide in South Whittier in the last 12 months, according to the L.A. Times homicide report.
