A man was arrested on suspicion of murdering a mother and her four young children Saturday night in their Brooklyn apartment with a butcher knife, police said Sunday.

Mingdong Chen, 25, reportedly a cousin of the children’s father, was arrested at the apartment on 57th Street where he’d been staying with the family, New York Police Department Sgt. Lee Jones told the Los Angeles Times.

The mother, 37, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, along with her 5-year-old son. Two girls, 9 and 7, and a 1-year-old boy were declared dead at the apartment.

A barefoot man with bloody feet was photographed being escorted from the scene by police on Saturday night. The Associated Press reported that Chen, who moved to the U.S. from China in 2004, implicated himself in the killings when interviewed by police.

The New York Post reported that Chen punched a detective while handcuffed to the table at a police station and threw eyeglasses at a Chinese-speaking sergeant, then knocked the sergeant to the ground.

A representative with the district attorney’s office for Brooklyn said she couldn’t comment on the pending charges Sunday afternoon, telling The Times only that Chen had not been arraigned yet.
