A bus crashed on a highway off-ramp Sunday near New Castle, Del., leaving one person dead and several dozen injured, authorities said.

The accident happened about 4:20 p.m. near Red Lion Road at Route 1, said Sgt. Paul G. Shavack, a spokesman with the Delaware State Police.

Shavack said the bus was carrying 50 people, including the driver, and 49 were transported to hospitals. A woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We’re still investigating the cause of this crash. We’re interviewing passengers and the driver to see what exactly happened,” Shavack said.

The bus operator was Am USA Express Inc., based in New York, he said. He had no information about where the trip began or where it was to end.

Pictures from social media showed paramedics along a grassy embankment loading passengers onto stretchers and into ambulances.

Shavack said additional details would be provided in coming days once an investigation was completed.
