First drizzle, then a storm expected
Light drizzle and cloudy skies are expected throughout much of Los Angeles today.
Temperatures will be in the 60s in most of the region, well below normal for this time of year, said Jamie Meier, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
On Tuesday, a big storm is expected to hit the area with heavy rainfall continuing through Wednesday, Meier said.
The rain is needed, Meier said, but it could put some of the areas burned in the recent Station fire at risk of debris flows. The fire burned 250 square miles in August and September, leaving hillsides barren.
“We are very much below normal and have been for the past few years as far as rainfall reservoir and snowpack,” she said. “But with the largest-ever L.A. County fire just ending, a large storm like this could have some devastating effects in terms of debris flows and mudslides.”
The U.S. Geological Survey released a report last week warning that major mudslides are likely this year in Pacoima Canyon, the Arroyo Seco, Big Tujunga Canyon and other areas.
The storm is expected to depart by late Wednesday. Sunny skies are expected by late Thursday and temperatures could climb back into the 80s by the weekend, Meier said.
