NATIONAL BRIEFING / NORTH DAKOTA

Share
Times Wire Reports

Residents of the tiny community of Kathryn cleared out as water spilled over a dam and began eroding it, while officials in nearby Valley City urged about half its residents to evacuate because of a flood threat that could persist for weeks.

National Guard soldiers in helicopters were dropping one-ton sandbags to help shore up the Clausen Springs Dam a few miles from Kathryn, a town of about 55 residents.

Valley City, about 17 miles north, has a population of nearly 7,000. City officials urged the elderly, disabled and people living in low-lying areas to evacuate to keep emergency routes open.
