A strong earthquake hit northeastern Afghanistan, rattling the capital, Kabul, for about a minute.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 and was centered in the northeastern province of Badakhshan in the Hindu Kush mountains.

The area, about 160 miles from Kabul, is often hit by earthquakes but is sparsely populated.
