Letters: ‘Obamacare’ is what Republicans want

Re “Repeal, not replace, is GOP focus,” July 11

No wonder the GOP has given up trying to fashion and sell a comprehensive health plan overhaul for the nation: It was effectively outdone by the president. Learning from earlier conservative think tanks and Mitt Romney’s work as governor of Massachusetts, President Obama went with the mandate.

The president’s plan is meeting most of the goals set by House Republicans in 2011: “preserve a patient’s ability to keep his or her health plan,” “provide people with preexisting conditions … access to affordable health coverage” and “increase the number of insured Americans.” The goals of lowering premiums and the national debt will be achieved over time.

I hope the GOP leadership continues to focus on repealing “Obamacare” while at the same time throwing in the towel on an alternative, as that surely is a losing gambit.

So “Obamacare” requires a tax, according to Republicans? So what? We all pay a Social Security tax and get payments when we retire. We all pay a Medicare tax and get good healthcare when we retire. We all pay for car insurance and get protection if we have an automobile accident.

Let’s keep the healthcare reform law in perspective.
