Letters: Faith didn’t get us to Mars

Re “Curiosity really hit the spot,” Aug. 7

We should remember this mission when right-wing politicians declare another war on science or threaten public education. Faith-based solutions may provide comfort to some, but only science can get us to Mars or solve the major problems looming for humans in the years ahead.

The amazingly accurate landing of Curiosity on Mars is yet another confirmation of the lesson preached by many intellectuals for hundreds of years: Knowledge is impossible, reason is impotent, there is no certainty, truth is relative, reality is unknowable, achievement is an illusion, man is doomed, and life is defeat.

Oh, wait, that’s not the lesson of the Mars landing?
