‘Diaper Baby’ Series Doesn’t Need Changing

It was with great humor that I read “School Panel Eyeing Book’s Toilet Humor” (June 3). My three young children are huge fans of the “Captain Underpants” series and I have yet to witness a decline in their moral character or an increase in their “irreverence to authority” as a result of their readings. The fact is that most children and adults find humor in potty material, be it a passage in “Captain Underpants” or the campfire scene in “Blazing Saddles.” As long as there is balance in what their children read, parents should have no fear of books that make light of a natural body function.

Regarding the grandmother’s disgust over the Super Diaper Baby books: Relax, Ms. Santi! Many kids (and adults I know, as well) think the books are hilarious. When I couldn’t get my son interested in reading, these books saved the day (like Captain Underpants). He read the series many times over, and we laughed together at the clever marquee anagrams of Harold and George. Author Dav Pilkey is my hero.
