Movie Producer
So you have a love for movies but no desire to act in one. Or you’re a problem solver that can get things done. Well, here’s a job for you.
A jack-of-all-trades type role to sink your teeth into: The movie producer.
The job may appear glamorous on the surface but in reality it’s a ton of hard work from start to finish. But if you are organized, connected, possess strong people and negotiating skills, than you have the makings for producing in the movie industry.
In general, the main film producer is responsible for putting together a quality movie that is engaging, produced on time and within budget. How he gets there is -- well -- that’s where the above skill set, along with a take-charge mentality and thick skin, comes into play.
A producer supervises and packages the film from conception to distribution. He interfaces with the studios, directors and actors. There are basically three phases to making a film: preproduction, production and postproduction.
Typically a producer is required to perform many of the following tasks and more:
• Sign off on the script
• Secure financing
• Select a director, cinematographer
• Cast the actors
• Develop a shooting schedule
• Handle problems with actors and creative staff
• Maintain a production timetable and budget
While film producers will always be needed, it’s a tough and competitive haul. Most will say that perseverance is a key. The rest is a series of moving up from various industry positions such as line producer or key grip.
Noteworthy producers include, Cecil B. DeMille, Walt Disney, David Brown, George Lucas and Spike Lee. These trailblazers are known for their individuality and nothing-is-impossible attitude.
