Breakers cross-country teams end season at Mt. SAC

The 2015 season has come to an end for the Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams who ran their final race Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Championship finals.

The divisional finals three-mile races at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut allowed teams to contend for a coveted spot in Saturday’s CIF State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno. Laguna’s girls’ team just missed securing a berth in the state meet, finishing in eighth place among 16 teams in the Division 4 team standings. The Laguna boys placed 11th among 16 teams also in Division 4.

The top seven teams advance to the state championships.

“I’m really proud of our team’s efforts this entire season,” Laguna girls’ Coach Steve Lalim said. “They worked hard in practice, and gave everything they could in the races. A tremendous group of girls, a pleasure to coach.”

Times and placements for the Laguna girls’ team were as follows: sophomore Grace LaMontagne (19:51.2, 39th); senior Taylor Alvarez (20:00.3, 49th); junior Ana Kelly (20:00.7, 50th); senior Pearl Shoemaker (20:16.8, 66th); senior Lauryn Alvarez (20:22.2, 71st); freshman Molly Cohn (20:41.3, 82nd); freshman Bella Fonk, 21:00.9, 87th).

Surfing

The Laguna Beach High surf team defeated JSerra Sunday in Event No. 1 of the Scholastic Surf Series at Ninth Street in Huntington Beach. The Breakers had a representative in each division final, putting four of six boys’ shortboard competitors in the finals.

Laguna’s Jake Levine was an individual champion in boys’ shortboard. In the division, Breakers Trey Lochhart was second, Zach Levine third, and Travis Booth fourth. Zach Levine also placed second in Boys’ Bodyboard competing on a rented bodyboard.

Laguna’s Jameson Roller (boys) and Lola Fisher (girls) also were impressive in the Longboard competition and each finished second in their respective divisions. Claire Kelly took fourth-place in Girls’ Shortboard.

The next Scholastic Surf Series event for Laguna is Dec 20.
