Nick Tropeano should rejoin the Angels this week, Tyler Skaggs could be close behind, and Nate Smith remains in reserve. The team’s starting rotation soon could look far different.

The Angels have not committed to giving struggling journeyman Jhoulys Chacin another turn in the rotation, and the expectation is they’ll move him to the bullpen or designate him for assignment when his spot comes up again Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla. Manager Mike Scioscia declined to offer any insight Saturday into what the club might do.

“We have some options in the rotation that we’re working through right now,” Scioscia said. “We’ve got some different directions that we can go.”

Tropeano’s recall from triple-A Salt Lake is only logical. He possesses the best earned-run average among healthy Angels starters this season. And Skaggs has quickly re-emerged as an option. Now in his 23rd month after Tommy John surgery, he threw five sharp innings Saturday for Salt Lake, striking out six and walking none. He could be in the majors before month’s end.

“I do think he’s getting close,” Scioscia said.

Smith, a 24-year-old left-hander named to this year’s All-Star Futures Game, has demonstrated advanced command in triple A.

“The more experience he’s gotten in pro ball, you see him start to understand his stuff a little better,” Scioscia said.

Short hops

MLB’s international signing period began Saturday. Limited to doling out bonuses of no more than $300,000 because of their 2014 signing of Roberto Baldoquin, the Angels signed three players, Dominican shortstop Adderlin Santana, Venezuelan catcher Edwin Bisay and Venezuelan right-hander Jose Natera. All are 16 years old. . . . Right-handed reliever Cory Rasmus will visit a doctor Wednesday in Colorado for a second opinion on his strained groin. He has been on the disabled list for all but four days since May 17. . . . Mike Trout’s fiancée, Jessica Cox, posted on social media that they recently became engaged.
