Reaffirming a commitment to winning from within, the Angels on Sunday announced they would recall first baseman-outfielder Robb Quinlan from triple-A Salt Lake City today to provide depth in the wake of an injury to third baseman Troy Glaus and an increasing inability to score runs.

“What’s happening with our club right now, a lot of the answers can come within,” Angel Manager Mike Scioscia said. “Robb will make us better and give us depth.”

Quinlan, who is hitting .310 with nine home runs and 68 runs batted in for the Stingers, provides another right-handed bat and can play first base in addition to left or right field. The 26-year-old will be in uniform tonight and could make his major-league debut when the Angels conclude a four-game series against the Oakland A’s at Edison Field.

Scioscia said his options are limited with a four-man bench, perhaps indicating that a pitcher, most likely reliever Mickey Callaway, would be the odd man out when Quinlan arrives unless the Angels completed a trade involving another reliever, most likely Ben Weber or Scott Schoeneweis. Callaway would have to clear waivers before the Angels could send him back to Salt Lake.

The Angels have averaged four runs per game since the All-Star break and one run per game during three consecutive losses to Oakland.

Scioscia said Glaus reported slight improvement in his bruised right shoulder Sunday but has not resumed any baseball activities.

One option to provide depth at third in the event that Glaus’ injury keeps him sidelined much longer than expected might be recently demoted infielder Chone Figgins. Typically a middle infielder, Figgins started at third base Saturday and Sunday for Triple-A Salt Lake.

“He had a number of chances and played very well,” Angel General Manager Bill Stoneman said of Figgins’ performance Saturday. “We’re trying him at a few positions. The more versatile a guy can be, the more valuable he’s going to be. What we’re trying to find out is, how versatile is he?”

The Angels will host a traveling exhibit from the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum during the series against the New York Yankees from Tuesday-Thursday inside Gate 2 at Edison Field. The exhibit features selected Ruth memorabilia, including a baseball signed by Ruth and a copy of Ruth’s rookie baseball card.... The Angels announced that Channel 9 would broadcast the Aug. 30 game at Kansas City.
