Kaman’s frustrations continue to mount

Center Chris Kaman scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds in 33 minutes in Friday’s 100-89 victory over the Boston Celtics.

In the Clippers’ three-game winning streak, Kaman is averaging five points and eight rebounds. And in the team’s current 7-1 stretch, Kaman has contributed 6.5 points and 7.8 rebounds.

“I’m frustrated,” Kaman said. “I just haven’t been playing the way I played last year. Knowing how I played last year, and knowing what I’m capable of, it’s very frustrating right now. That’s what has me the angriest about this.”

Kaman established career highs in his third season, averaging 11.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.38 blocked shots in 32.8 minutes.

General Manager Elgin Baylor and Coach Mike Dunleavy thought so highly of Kaman that they persuaded owner Donald T. Sterling to reward the 7-foot, 265-pound player with a $52-million contract extension.

Nagging injuries this season have affected Kaman’s conditioning and stamina, the Clippers said, but it appears his energy level has increased in practice recently.

“I’ve been doing a decent job defensively, but offensively my game is nowhere near where it was last year,” he said. “The good thing is that we’ve been able to play with a lot more energy and we’ve been getting wins.”

Kaman acknowledged many things haven’t gone well for him on the court to this point and “there is some other [personal] stuff I’m not going to discuss,” he said. “A lot of things go into it, so you just have to keep working hard to get through it.”
