Spero Dedes said to be replacing Joel Meyers as Lakers’ TV announcer

The Lakers would not comment on media reports that team television play-by-play announcer Joel Meyers will be replaced by radio play-by-play announcer Spero Dedes at the end of the season.

Dedes would become the third Lakers television announcer since the death of Hall of Famer Chick Hearn. Paul Sunderland took over for Hearn after Hearn’s death in August 2002.

“All of our announcers are under contract and we’re not going to discuss that situation until the end of the season,” said Lakers vice president of public relations John Black.

This all comes on the heels of the Lakers signing a 20-year television deal in February that reportedly is worth $3 billion with Time Warner Cable that will start in the 2012-13 season. Time Warner will cover all the Lakers’ preseason, regular-season and postseason games that are not nationally televised.

Dedes, 31, is in his sixth season with the Lakers, all of them working on radio.

He has been considered a rising star since joining the Lakers from the YES Network in New York. He was the voice of that network’s college sports and was the No.2 announcer on New Jersey Nets telecasts. Dedes also was a studio host for Yankees and Nets pre- and postgame shows.

Dedes also worked for NBA TV as a play-by-play announcer and host.

Meyers is entering his eighth season working with the Lakers — two in radio as the team’s play-by-play announcer and the last six serving the same role on television.

Meyers succeeded Sunderland as the Lakers’ television play-by-play announcer. Meyers had previously spent four seasons as the voice of the San Antonio Spurs.

He has 25 years of broadcast experience, including calling NFL games and Big 12 college football.

“I don’t want to talk,” Meyers said after the Lakers lost, 86-85, to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. “Thank you, though.”
