UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley tries, tries again

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley was denied by his coach once. He took no chances the second time during practice Tuesday.

Hundley was certain he threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Johnathan Franklin during a two-minute drill at Cal State San Bernardino, but Coach Jim Mora called him down.

Hundley responded by tossing a 51-yard touchdown pass to Darius Bell on his next two-minute opportunity.

Take that.

“Brett is just unflappable,” Mora said. “You do those drills to create situations and cause problems that they have to solve. When he makes a mistake or an error in judgment, by the time he gets to the sideline, he knows exactly how to handle the situation.”

Still, Mora is holding off naming a starting quarterback for now.

“I have an inkling,” Mora said.

Next up, he said, will be a “conviction.” He said he already had a hunch by the end of spring practice.

“Everyone comes here to play and we all think we should be the guy,” Hundley said. “You just have to show what you can do and let coach make the decision.”

The heat is on (still)

The Bruins sweated it out again Tuesday. But the health issue most concerning was the concussion linebacker Patrick Larimore suffered Monday. Larimore missed part of spring practice with a concussion.

Mora pushed back practice time from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Tuesday. It was 109 degrees at 4 p.m. and had dropped to 104 by 5:30 p.m. Still, there were fewer problems than on Monday.

Defensive tackle Cassius Marsh and guard Jeff Baca left practice with heat issues. Offensive linemen Brett Downey, Simon Goines and linebacker Jordan Zumwalt were held inside as a precaution after leaving practice Monday.

Barr busy

Anthony Barr is making a rapid adjustment to linebacker. He forced a fumble and recovered a fumble Tuesday before leaving practice with a hand injury.

Accountability

Mora went on a long rant Tuesday over what he felt was a lack of effort … from his assistants. He sent the team for “popsicles” and held a coaches meeting on the field.

“Players rise to the level that coaches demand of them,” Mora said. “I don’t have much sympathy for people that don’t operate at a high standard all the time. That’s what we’re getting paid well to do. It’s my responsibility to make sure we get back to it.”

Safety Dalton Hilliard missed practice after experiencing dizziness in the morning, and tight end Joseph Fauria left practice with a hip problem.… Cal State San Bernardino is hosting a recruitment drive for sororities this week. So much for the idea of UCLA players having no distractions during training camp.
