USC’s Tre Madden rushes more than 100 yards for third straight game

Tre Madden is making a habit of rushing for more than 100 yards.

The sophomore tailback ran for 102 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries in USC’s 35-7 victory over Boston College on Saturday at the Coliseum.

It was the third consecutive 100-yard effort for Madden, who ran for a 30-yard touchdown and also caught a five-yard touchdown pass.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Madden is the first USC player to rush for more than 100 yards in the first three games since Marcus Allen achieved the feat in 1981, the year he won the Heisman Trophy.

“I don’t really care about the streak,” said Madden, who rushed for 109 yards against Hawaii and 151 against Washington State. “We won today. That’s as good a streak as I need.”

Madden’s only major miscue was a second-quarter fumble at the USC three-yard line. Luckily for the Trojans, it was recovered by tight end Randall Telfer.

“I’ve definitely got to work on my ball security,” Madden said. “That fumble was big. I’m going to have to take whoever recovered that out to dinner, so we’ll work on that.”

Freshman Justin Davis rushed for 96 yards in 10 carries. He scored on a 17-yard run and also had a 39-yard gain.

Wright stuff

Senior safety Demetrius Wright started for the second consecutive game and led the Trojans with seven tackles.

Boston College’s 184 yards were the fewest allowed by the Trojans since holding San Jose State to 121 in 2009.

USC, which had seven sacks against Hawaii and four against Washington State, had only one against Boston College. Reserve linebacker Quinton Powell had two of the Trojans’ eight tackles for losses.

USC, which intercepted six passes in the first two games, had none against Boston College quarterback Chase Rettig. The Trojans broke up three passes and had four quarterback hurries.

Rettig, who played at Pasadena La Salle and San Clemente high schools, completed 11 of 24 passes for 83 yards.

Lee rising

After catching two passes for a career-low 27 yards last week against Washington State, USC receiver Marqise Lee had two receptions for 90 yards against Boston College, including an 80-yard scoring play.

Lee has 208 career receptions, third on USC’s all-time list behind Robert Woods, who had 252 and Dwayne Jarrett, who had 216.

Penalty problems

The Trojans were penalized 10 times for 100 yards.

The costliest penalty occurred in the second quarter.

Defensive back Leon McQuay III blocked a punt and Lee, who was on the punt-block unit, scooped up the ball and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown.

The play was nullified, however, because lineman Antwaun Woods was offside.

Moving tribute

Before the game, the Coliseum crowd observed a moment of silence in memory of the late Nick Pasquale, a UCLA football player who was struck by a car and died last week in San Clemente.

Rogers injured

Freshman receiver Darreus Rogers suffered what appeared to be an ankle injury in the first quarter and did not return.

Quick hits

Former USC All-American safety Ronnie Lott was an honorary captain and led the Trojans onto the field…. USC improved its record against Boston College to 4-0. The Trojans last victory was in the 2009 Emerald Bowl.
