USC’s Marqise Lee expects bigger role against No. 5 Stanford

USC will have a huge stage when it plays Stanford on Saturday at the Coliseum, a setting seemingly made for Marqise Lee.

The junior reiterated Tuesday that he would be ready when called upon after having a limited role in victories over Oregon State and California.

Last Saturday at Berkeley, Lee had one reception. He estimated that he was in for 10 to 15 plays before coaches pulled him to prevent reinjury of his left knee.

Lee, who has caught no more than eight passes in a game this season, said he was fine with any role that helps the Trojans continue to win. But he anticipates a larger one Saturday when they play the fifth-ranked Cardinal at the Coliseum.

“I think this game they’ll let me loose a little bit,” he said after practice.

Lee has a team-best 38 receptions for the Trojans, who have won four of five games under interim Coach Ed Orgeron.

ESPN’s “College GameDay” show will originate from USC on Saturday and a large homecoming crowd is expected at the Coliseum.

“It’s a spotlight game for us, you know, coming from where we came from, the things that are going on, that went on in this program,” Lee said. “This one, you could say, is a little bit bigger.”

Lee said last week that he was 100%, and repeated Tuesday that he was not limited.

“I could have done everything last week and the week before but [receivers] Coach Tee [Martin] wasn’t allowing that,” he said, laughing.

Sophomore Nelson Agholor caught four passes against Cal, De’Von Flournoy and tight end Xavier Grimble three each.

Lee expects that coaches will continue to monitor him Saturday.

“I can’t question it,” he said. “I can always tell you I’m OK. At the end of the day, the coaches have the final decision on how much you play, though.

“So, hopefully this game is different.”

Said Orgeron: “As the week goes by, we’ll see what we can do with him. In a game like this, if he can go the whole game, he’ll go the whole game. It all depends on how he feels during the game.”

Madden preparing

Tailback Tre Madden, who sat out most of the game against Oregon State and all of the Cal game because of a hamstring injury, said he would be ready to play against Stanford.

Madden said he had been cleared to play, but he did not participate in most drills Tuesday. He continued to work with athletic trainers on the field.

Madden would help a tailback corps that has been thinned by injuries.

Third-year sophomore Javorius Allen and freshman Ty Isaac are available, but Silas Redd is questionable because of a knee injury suffered against Cal.

Freshman Justin Davis suffered a season-ending ankle injury Oct. 19 against Notre Dame. Junior D.J. Morgan had not played before undergoing knee surgery last week.

Quick hits

Defensive end Leonard Williams (shoulder) and Grimble (shoulder) are probable, and tight end Randall Telfer (knee) questionable for Saturday, Orgeron said.
