Dodgers call up Chris Heisey, designate reliever Dan Coulombe

The Dodgers do love their outfielders.

After having already added reserve outfielders Justin Ruggiano and Scott Schebler last week -- both of whom later homered -- the Dodgers added yet one more prior to Sunday’s game, calling up Chris Heisey from triple-A Oklahoma City.

Adding Heisey again -- he was released by the team last month, signed with Toronto and then traded back to the Dodgers Aug. 31 -- meant the Dodgers had to create space on the 40-man roster.

Left-handed reliever Daniel Coulombe was designated for assignment to make roster room.

Coulombe, 25, showed promise in the minors (3.27 ERA, 41 strikeouts in 411/3 innings at Oklahoma City) but could not translate that success in six brief call-ups to the Dodgers (7.65 ERA, 1.80 WHIP) this season.

Heisey, 30, was originally acquired in the off-season in a trade with the Reds for Matt Magill, and some expected him to make the club as a reserve outfielder but he had only five hits in 50 spring at-bats.

Previously he was called up twice this season, but hit just .154 in 34 plate appearances (eight walks).

Heisey bats right-handed and can play all three outfield positions. Schebler is left-handed, but Ruggiano is also right-handed. The Dodgers already have outfielders Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford, Joc Pederson, Scott Van Slyke and Alex Guerrero. Yasiel Puig is on the disabled list with a strained hamstring and may not return by the end of the regular season.
