Cathedral city

Most Angelenos have spent at least part of a day at one of these six locations in the Southland. Some are no longer in use, some have seen their best days, and some look as nice as the day they were built, but they all remain landmarks of life in Los Angeles, whether you were a fan of the team playing there or not.

Dodger Stadium

Debut: The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Dodgers, 6-3, in the first regular-season game played at Dodger Stadium, on April 10, 1962.

How much did it cost? $18 million.

Who plays there? Dodgers.

Special moments: Kirk Gibson’s pinch-hit, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series (Oct. 15); rookie Fernando Valenzuela pitches a shutout in the 1981 home opener (April 9).

Coliseum

Debut: The USC Trojans defeated Pomona College, 23-7, in the first varsity football game played at the Coliseum, on Oct. 6, 1923.

How much did it cost? $1 million.

Who plays there? USC football.

Special moment: Rafer Johnson’s lighting the flame at the opening ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympics (July 28, 1984). The Coliseum remains the only facility in the world to play host to two Olympics (1932, 1984).

Sports Arena

Debut: Groundbreaking April 7, 1958; dedication July 4, 1959.

How much did it cost? $6 million.

Who plays there? Nobody (USC basketball is moving to Galen Center, an on-campus facility, next season).

Special moments: Wilt Chamberlain made his National Basketball Assn. debut with the Philadelphia Warriors on Sept. 30, 1959. Chamberlain scored 28 points in a 106-102 exhibition victory over the St. Louis Hawks. UCLA won national championships in men’s basketball at the Sports Arena in 1968 (over North Carolina) and 1972 (over Florida State).

Angel Stadium

Debut: The Chicago White Sox defeated the California Angels, 3-1, in the first regular-season game played at Angel Stadium on April 19, 1966.

How much did it cost? $24 million.

Who plays there? Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Special moment: Last out of the 2002 World Series. Darin Erstad caught Kenny Lofton’s fly ball with two out and two runners on in the ninth inning to preserve the Angels’ 4-1 Series-clinching victory in Game 7. (Oct. 27, 2002)

Forum

Debut: 1967. First hockey game: Kings vs. Philadelphia Flyers, Dec. 30; first basketball game: Lakers vs. San Diego Rockets, Dec. 31.

How much did it cost? $16 million.

Who played there? King hockey, Laker basketball.

Special moment: Laker guard Jerry West’s 60-foot shot to send Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks into overtime. The Lakers were defeated in overtime, 111-108. (April 29)

Pauley Pavilion

Debut: Introduced to the university at the June 1965 commencement exercises; first basketball game: UCLA freshmen versus UCLA varsity, Nov. 27, 1965. The freshmen, led by Lew Alcindor, beat the defending national champion varsity, 75-60.

How much did it cost? $5 million.

Who plays there? Bruin athletic teams, including basketball, volleyball and gymnastics.

Special moment: UCLA’s longest winning streak in men’s basketball at Pauley Pavilion was 98 games (ending on Feb. 21, 1976, when Oregon defeated UCLA, 65-45).
