A look at how Dodgers’ prospects performed in the Arizona Fall League

Baseball’s Arizona Fall League, considered something of a finishing school for top prospects, wrapped up Saturday, so it seems only fitting to take a quick look at how the Dodgers finished up:

-- Corey Seager, shortstop: Considering how he struggled (.181 batting average, two homers, three doubles in 19 games) a year ago as a 19-year-old, he showed marked improvement.

He made the AFL all-star team and looked a lot more like the Dodgers’ top prospect, hitting .281 with a team-high 10 doubles, one homer and 14 RBIs in 89 at-bats.

-- Scott Schebler, outfielder: Yep, looks like the Dodgers have another strong left-handed-hitting outfielder on the rise. Schebler, who hit 28 home runs with 73 RBIs at double-A Chattanooga last season, just kept it going in Phoenix.

Schebler, the Dodgers’ Minor League Player of the Year last season, led his Desert Dogs team with five homers and 17 runs, while batting .310.

He was a 26th-round draft pick in 2010.

-- Darnell Sweeney, second base: Cooled somewhat in the second half but still hit .316 with 12 RBIs in 19 games.

-- Matt Magill, right-hander: He finished 2-3 with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP, with 21 strikeouts in 25 innings. Started in six of his seven appearances.

-- Mike Thomas, reliever: He struck out 76 in 59 1/3 innings last season at Chattanooga, but also walked 41. For the Desert Dogs, the left-hander threw 13 innings, going 1-0 with one save, a 4.85 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

He turns 26 in January, so either his time is coming soon or it’s probably not coming.

-- Blake Smith, reliever: The right-hander appeared in 11 games, going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA and a whopping 2.55 WHIP, but he tied for the team lead with two saves. In 11 innings, he struck out 13 and walked 11.

He turns 27 next month, so see above.

-- Dan Coulombe, reliever: The left-hander started the season in Class A and ended it with the Dodgers. He appeared in only four AFL games (no earned runs) before something must have barked, because he was shut down early and did not pitch again after Oct. 21.
