Yasiel Puig was hinting at a turnaround just in time for the stretch, but instead Friday found himself on the sideline.

The Dodgers placed Puig on the 15-day disabled list after he aggravated his right hamstring running out an infield hit Thursday in Cincinnati and called infielder Jose Peraza back up from triple-A Oklahoma City.

Puig originally injured the hamstring on similar play in Oakland Aug. 18. That was deemed “very mild” and he missed only two games before returning to the lineup. Puig said Thursday he had not fully recovered and was trying to play through the injury.

“With the treatment I was receiving, I was able to withstand the games,” he said.

Manager Don Mattingly, however, said Friday the Dodgers did not have the sense he was attempting to play through it.

“We had the sense he was totally recovered,” Mattingly said.

Rosters can be expanded Sept. 1 but the Dodgers elected not to play a man short the next four games, three against the Cubs and one against the Giants.

“We could have decided to play short a few days, but we feel like it’s going to be more than 10 days,” Mattingly said. “At that point it kind of put us over the tipping point, and we might as well put him on the DL and have a player up.”

Puig was also out for more than six weeks this season when he injured his left hamstring. As with most hamstring injuries, Mattingly said the team was uncertain how long Puig would be out this time.

Puig has had a disappointing third season with the Dodgers. He had only a .241/.314/.409 slash line on Aug. 10, but had gone 15 for 45 since with three home runs.

Peraza, 21, was up for two games earlier this month. At Oklahoma City, he was hitting .289/.333/.375.
