Kings’ Alec Martinez has surgery on finger, is out indefinitely

The injury list keeps getting rewritten by the Kings.

With one defenseman, Robyn Regehr, ready and poised to return to the lineup, another is out for an undetermined period of time. Alec Martinez, who was injured against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, had finger surgery the following morning, according to the Kings’ website.

His injury is said to be different than the one suffered by defenseman Jake Muzzin in the preseason. Muzzin broke his finger near the end of training camp and missed the first six games of the regular season.

“We haven’t been told how long he could be out yet,” Kings Coach Darryl Sutter told The Times on Friday afternoon.

Regehr missed the last three games because of a lower-body injury but took part in a full practice Friday. He skated on consecutive days and is hoping to return for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Ducks.

“I’ll talk to the boss [Sutter] about that,” Regehr said. “I don’t make those decisions. It’s always nice to have more [practice sessions], but I feel things are good. I don’t feel like I’m causing any unnecessary risk.”

The rash of injuries has forced Sutter to be at his creative best. He tinkered with the lines at practice, putting Jeff Carter with Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik, and placing center Mike Richards with Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli.

Adversity has been the theme of the first quarter of the season.

“There hasn’t been many scenarios this group hasn’t been through before,” said Kings captain Dustin Brown, who was on a line with center Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams.

Of the first 17 games, how many have featured “the real Kings?”

“Probably a handful,” Brown admitted. “I think we have been successful because we understand what it takes to win.

“When we were not doing it … it’s very easy to say that we have to do the right things. It’s a process — there’s ups and downs, valleys and peaks. Part of what makes this team great is when we’re at the bottom, we always find a way to lean on each other and find a way to get out of it.”

Etc.: Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said goalie Frederik Andersen will start against the Kings. Andersen was pulled against the Kings in the second period Wednesday after allowing three goals on 10 shots.
