Baseball: Chaminade stuns Alemany, 1-0, in Mission League

For one day and one game, Chaminade finally played to the ability it always thought it could. Tommy Costello threw six shutout innings and Anthony Acosta followed with three more shutout innings to help the Eagles upset Alemany, 1-0, in a nine-inning Mission League game.

Chaminade (9-13, 2-5) scored the winning run on an infield single by Victor Oppenheimer. Carter Yankie threw seven shutout innings for Alemany (15-7, 5-2), which fell out of a first-place tie with Loyola.

Loyola took over sole possession of first place with a 9-1 win over Crespi. Matt McGeagh hit a grand slam and junior Holden Groff (7-1, 0.87 ERA) gave up one run in four innings. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated St. Francis, 16-4. Chris Collins threw a complete game and Colin Brophy had three hits and two RBI.

In the Del Rey League, sophomore left-hander Isaac Esqueda struck out 10 in six innings and combined with Xavier Chavez on a no-hitter in Bishop Amat’s 2-0 win over Gardena Serra. Cathedral defeated La Salle, 4-3. Omar Veloz drove in the winning run in the sixth.

Village Christian defeated Valley Christian, 8-0, in the Olympic League. Chris Davidson allowed one hit in six innings.

In the Big VIII League, Norco defeated King, 6-2. Corona Santiago defeated Corona Centennial, 7-4. Brice Turang, Jacob Shanks and Jesse Rivera each had two hits.

Temescal Canyon defeated Heritage, 10-3. Devin McKesson struck out eight in six innings while going three for four with four RBI.

Burroughs set up a Friday showdown for first place in the Pacific League against Crescenta Valley with a 2-1 win over Glendale. Aidan Anding and Chris Peres each had two hits. Burroughs will play the Falcons at Stengel Field. Crescenta Valley defeated Pasadena, 4-3, in 10 innings. Brian Gadsby threw 5 2/3 innings of relief, which will likely limit is availability for Friday’s game against Burroughs. Chase Walker had three hits.

Burbank defeated Arcadia, 4-3.

El Segundo defeated Hawthorne, 16-4. Lars Nootbaar had a home run and four RBI. Jake Palmer had three hits and three RBI. Culver City defeated Santa Monica, 6-2. Jay Sterner threw a complete game, Nolan Martinez had two hits and Mason Mulvihill added three RBI.

Beckman defeated Irvine, 3-0. Blake Polley allowed six hits in the shutout. Isaiah Bull had two hits.

In the Trinity League, Austin Reyes had three hits in Mater Dei’s 7-2 win over Orange Lutheran. Sam Cachoia hit a home run. Michael Thomas threw a four-hitter.

In the Channel League, Ventura defeated Santa Barbara, 1-0, in 10 innings. Sophomore Brock Mortenson drove in the winning run. Santa Barbara’s Kevin Gowdy struck out nine in seven shutout innings. Travis Hawkins of Ventura threw nine shutout innings.

Sierra Canyon (16-4) defeated Viewpoint, 12-3. Brock Bell and Jake Patterson each had three hits.

Jacob Williams hit a three-run home run in Heritage Christian’s 8-4 win over Channel Islands.
