Baseball: What a collegiate debut for former Alemany standout Alex McKenna

Share

The Minnesota Twins selected Alex McKenna from Alemany High in the 38th round of last June’s amateur draft. That will be the last time any pro team lets McKenna get away.

In his collegiate debut this past week as a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, McKenna went six for 12 with a triple, two home runs and five RBI as the leadoff batter in a four-game sweep of Pacific.

McKenna was considered one of the best athletes at Alemany, a former quarterback with a great arm, speed and skills. He was one of the top players in the Mission League, the same league that has produced the likes of Giancarlo Stanton.

He’ll be at San Luis Obispo for the next three years before major-league baseball gets its next crack at him. And it won’t be in the 38th round.
