Boys’ basketball: Del Rey League is one of the toughest

Share

When the Southern Section playoff pairings are announced next weekend, the Del Rey League should get lots of respect.

Bishop Montgomery (24-1) and Cathedral (17-5) are definite Open Division teams, and Cantwell-Sacred Heart (14-10) also could be selected. Perhaps only the Baseline League with Damien, Chino Hills and Etiwanda is better.

Bishop Montgomery and Cathedral had another close game on Wednesday, with Bishop Montgomery finally prevailing, 76-69.

“They’re just a well-coached team that plays well together,” Cathedral Coach William Middlebrooks said. “All their guys can score, so they have no weaknesses offensively.”

Cathedral keeps coming close but turnovers in key situations have hurt the Phantoms. Middlebrooks is hoping some of his young players can learn from their mistakes and be ready for the pressure situations of the playoffs.

“When you turn the ball over in crunch time, it’s youth,” he said. “You have to live with that. It’s one of those deals you have to understand the situation. Our guys are starting to understand that.”

Junior Kobe Paras had 18 points on Wednesday for Cathedral. It will be interesting to see how he responds in the playoffs.
