Boys’ basketball: Introducing Chaminade’s 6-11 freshman center from Australia

14-year-old freshman could be impact player

There’s three things that you immediately notice about Makur Maker, a 6-foot-11 freshman from Australia who arrived at West Hills Chaminade.

He’s tall, he’s thin and he smiles a lot.

“He’s every bit 14 years old,” Coach Ryan Moore said. “I don’t think anyone would compare him to Shaq on the low block at this point, but he’s a very skilled young man, a great teammate, super quiet, very coachable. He’s got everything you want in a 14-year-old at this point.”

Maker runs up and down the court well and certainly can shoot from beyond three-point range. But Moore will be working on getting him to block shots better, rebound consistently and gain strength.

The fact he’s an A student and wanting to listen and learn is a good sign for the future.
