Commentary: Football: Inglewood schools face tough challenge in Bay League

Share

Somebody please tell me how Inglewood and Morningside happen to be in the same football league with Palos Verdes, Mira Costa and Redondo. It’s called the Bay League. I call it the haves versus the have-nots.

Inglewood and Morningside each have good coaches in Jason Miller and Derwin Henderson, respectively, but their school district offers little support for sports in comparison with Redondo, Mira Costa and Palos Verdes, all of whom have magnificent athletic facilities and strong parental booster support.

Miller and Henderson each said they have about 10 incoming freshmen who have shown up for fall football practice. TEN. More could come out as the start of the school year approaches in September, but the lack of young players makes it difficult to build a competitive varsity program. Neither school will have a freshman team.

Last season, Inglewood and Morningside were in the Ocean League with Santa Monica, Culver City, Hawthorne and Beverly Hills.

The new league was put together by the South Bay Athletic Assn. and is set for a tenure of at least two years. It’s laughable. What will happen if Inglewood and Morningside don’t have a football team in two years?

“We’re hoping we get kids who trickle in,” Miller said.

Good luck to Miller and Henderson. They’ll be doing their best in adverse conditions.
