Football: It could be wild final week in Mission League

Share

As good as Encino Crespi (7-1, 4-1) has played this season, the Celts still haven’t locked up a Pac-5 Division playoff berth with one game to play.

If Crespi loses to Alemany (7-2, 3-2) next week, the Celts could drop to fourth place in the Mission League and will have to hope to gain one of the two at-large berths. And that’s no guarantee.

Of course, things will be very simple if Crespi, Gardena Serra (7-2, 4-1) and Bishop Amat (6-3, 4-1) all win next week. There would be a three-way tie for first place, and all three would advance. Coin flips would decide playoff seedings.

Alemany has put itself in position to gain a playoff spot with a hard-fought 14-10 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. The Warriors played without starting quarterback Blake Green (gone for season with shoulder injury), then lost running back Dominic Davis (ankle) and receiver Desean Holmes (neck) early in the game.

“The defense played great,” Coach Dean Herrington said.

Sophomore quarterback Cayden Dunn completed 17 of 21 passes for 185 yards. Freshman quarterback Brevin White, brother of Hart quarterback Brady White, also played. Both could see action next week against Crespi.

Bishop Amat ends its season against Notre Dame and Serra plays Loyola. Bishop Amat overcame the absence of quarterback Damian Garcia (ribs) to defeat Loyola, 46-23. Ryder Ruiz, the brother of former Bishop Amat quarterback Rio Ruiz, took over. Serra knocked off its former rival from the old Mission League, Chaminade, 41-28.
