Angels squeeze out 2-1 exhibition win over Texas

Share

Angels 2, Rangers 1

AT THE PLATE: A day after collecting 19 hits and 13 runs, the Angels had to scratch for offense against Texas, scoring one run when the speedy Peter Bourjos raced home from first on a Maicer Izturis double and the other on Jeff Mathis’ suicide squeeze, which scored Mark Trumbo. Bourjos and Trumbo are tied for the team lead with seven runs apiece this spring.

ON THE MOUND: Starter Ervin Santana gave up one hit in three shutout innings and four relievers took it from there, holding the Rangers scoreless until there were two outs in the ninth. Left-hander Hisanori Takahashi went two innings in his second appearance of the spring.

EXTRA BASES: The Angels threw out only three would-be basestealers in their first 10 Cactus League games before Mathis threw out two in consecutive innings Tuesday. After the game the Angels reassigned nonroster catchers Carlos Ramirez, Jose Jimenez and Anel de los Santos to minor league camp. Jimenez had a double in his only spring at-bat, and Ramirez played in four games, batting once. De los Santos has been out since tearing a ligament in his thumb during a drill early in camp.

UP NEXT: Scott Kazmir is scheduled to go four innings or 55 pitches, whichever comes first, when he starts against Jhoulys Chacin and the Colorado Rockies at Tempe Diablo Stadium at noon PDT Wednesday.
