Kings Coach Terry Murray will stick with same lineup for Game 6

Facing a second elimination game in a row, Kings Coach Terry Murray said he would use the same lineup Monday at Staples Center as he used in his team’s 3-1 victory Saturday at San Jose.

That means winger Scott Parse, whose appearance Saturday was his first since a hip injury forced him out of the lineup Nov. 15, stays on the left with Michal Handzus and Justin Williams. The other combinations were Dustin Penner-Jarret Stoll-Kevin Westgarth, Ryan Smyth-Trevor Lewis-Dustin Brown, and Kyle Clifford-Brad Richardson-Wayne Simmonds.

Parse played 10 minutes 17 seconds Saturday and had no shots and one attempt blocked. He wasn’t on the ice for any goals.

“Parse going in for the first time in several months, I thought he played pretty well,” Murray said Sunday after the team practiced in El Segundo. “He showed a lot of confidence with the puck. And he has that, I guess you call it a little bit of that inner arrogance you have to have as a pro athlete to have the confidence in your own game to play and to know exactly what it is you can do and try to do it.

“I thought he stopped in and did a decent job. … He brought us the offensive part of the game, some skill, that I knew he could and hopefully it can be better” Monday.

Murray also said Penner’s game was “good” on the fourth line because he wasn’t matched against the Sharks’ top scorers. Penner scored off a setup from Westgarth, his first goal since March 13.

“He worked. He was focused. He used his size,” Murray said. “The matchup right now is important. I’m giving him an opportunity here to back away on having to shut down a [Joe] Thornton line on the checking part of the game. He’s capable, but the game is just not there right now so with a different look it’s an opportunity to kind of get your game together and have some success and maybe certainly not the same threat coming at him as the Thornton line.”

Westgarth’s assist was nifty — and he did it with a chopped-up right (punching) hand that he said is likely to need surgical repair this summer.

“Armor on the back and marshmallow-soft on the front,” he said of his hands.

Slap shots

Sharks Coach Todd McLellan told reporters before the team left San Jose that goaltender Antti Niemi would start Monday. Niemi was replaced by Antero Niittymaki on Saturday after giving up three goals on four shots. Niemi had been yanked from Game 3, in which the Sharks rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 6-5 overtime win.

San Jose was 0 for 4 on the power play Saturday and is two for 20. The Kings were 0 for 1 Saturday and three for 20 overall. However, they’re 0 for 11 since converting three of nine advantages in the first two games. … The Manchester (N.H.) Monarchs, the Kings’ top farm team, were eliminated from the American Hockey League playoffs after losing a seventh game in overtime to the Binghamton (N.Y.) Senators, Ottawa’s top affiliate. The Kings haven’t called up any players from Manchester to practice with them, as teams often do when their farm team’s season ends.
