Alcohol ads show no tact

Some of the highs and lows of watching Angels-Red Sox Game 1:

Say hey:

Welcome to Angels Stadium. The high-definition blimp shot of all the traffic lights? Almost pretty enough to send a person to a car and onto the 5 Freeway. Or maybe not.

Say what?

Someone needs to change this now. TBS ran an ad for Captain Morgan liquor touting the benefits of the big bottle that offers drinkers 40 shots. Immediately followed by a Fox/TBS ad for its postseason baseball coverage that begins: “Every game the Angels honor their teammate Nick Adenhart.” You know, the teammate killed this year by an alleged drunk driver.

Replay this

Red Sox fans should be screaming. In the bottom of the fourth, Howie Kendrick was clearly tagged out by Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis. First base umpire CB Bucknor called Kendrick safe, said the tag was missed. Two different replays showed Youkilis practically punched Kendrick in the stomach before Kendrick’s foot touched first.

Replay this II

Kendrick is out again in the bottom of the sixth. Except he’s not as Bucknor is proven totally wrong in his decision that Youkilis’ foot didn’t beat Kendrick’s. After Youkilis had made a terrific catch of a sailed throw from third. Replay doesn’t lie.

Sharp shot

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia patting catcher Jeff Mathis on the back during a serious chat about Mathis’ catchers’ interference episode in the bottom of the second. The back pat seemed to negate Martinez’s instant analysis that Mathis was getting a “stern” talking to.

Before & after

Lots of pregame montage shots of Red Sox playoff wins against the Angels. Can’t say that wasn’t truth in advertising. But it was offset with a perfect-ending post-game interview by Marc Fein with Torii Hunter.

Not in the box score: It will just look like an F8 to end the Angels’ sixth but it was so much more. Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury’s smooth move to track the ball, his perfect laid-out position that allowed him to steal a double from Figgins.

And another thing: Martinez is no Bob Brenly. Dodgers-Cardinals series won in the best division series analyst, SoCal category. And the Angels are automatic losers in play-by-play guy since they got Red Sox regular Don Orsillo. How does that happen?
