Louisiana State routs UC Irvine, 21-7

Blake Dean was five for five and drove in three runs and Ryan Schimpf was four for five with five RBIs as Louisiana State beat UC Irvine, 21-7, Monday night at Baton Rouge, La., to earn a trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

Dean and Schimpf were part of a 24-hit, seven-home-run attack for the Tigers.

LSU scored in all but two innings, including six runs in the first inning and seven runs in the fifth.

Anteaters starting pitcher Bryce Stowell (8-3) left the game with two out and one on in the first inning. By that time he had faced nine batters and given up three home runs and was trailing, 6-0.

Buzzy Haydell knocked one out for LSU in the eighth to make it 20-7.

UC Irvine used seven pitchers in an unsuccessful effort to slow down the LSU (48-17-1) bats.

Eric Deragisch homered for UC Irvine (42-18) in the top of the third. Dillon Bell added another home run for the Anteaters in the seventh inning. UC Irvine picked up two more runs in the eighth.

Left-hander Blake Martin started for the Tigers, giving up five hits and two runs. He left in the fifth, with two out and runners at second and third. Jordan Brown (5-0) came in to get the final out and the victory since Martin lasted only 4 2/3 innings.

UC Irvine was trying to get to the College World Series for a second consecutive season. This will be LSU’s 14th trip to Omaha, the last being in 2004.

Fresno State 12, Arizona State 9 -- Steve Susdorf’s two-run homer capped a six-run seventh inning as Fresno State stunned fourth-ranked Arizona State (49-13) at Tempe, Ariz., to advance to the College World Series.

Fresno State (42-29), seeded fourth in the Long Beach Regional last week, is the first-ever fourth-seeded team to advance to the College World Series since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1999.

Susdorf tied the score in the top of the sixth with a single, but his big hit came the following inning.

Fresno State loaded the bases with two out against Sun Devils reliever Mike Leake. Leake hit Gavin Hedstrom with a pitch to give the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead, and Erik Wetzel followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 9-5.

Susdorf then homered to put Fresno State ahead 11-5.
