Bottom 10

Special to The Times

The Bottom Ten pollsters, like their Top Ten counterparts, are forgiving folks. They’ll overlook early season disasters in their later rankings.

So, while Michigan (2-3) and Arizona State (2-3) aren’t challenging for the Bottom Ten lead quite yet, don’t count out these two powder-puffs.

The Woe-verines, under the wise leadership of their new coach, Rich Rodriguez, play Toledo (1-4) next in a must-lose game for both teams. Toledo is coming off a 31-0 loss to the only school in the nation that offers nothing but physical education classes, Ball State.

ASU, meanwhile, figures to be devoured by USC, whose 44-10 rout of Oregon eased the pressure on Coach Pete Carroll and stalled a Bring-Back-Hackett movement.

Even if the Woe-verines and Sun Devils knock themselves out of contention with victories, there’s still that Nov. 22 biggie (or, rather, smallie): No. 1 Washington (0-5) vs. No. 2 Washington State (1-5).

* Crummy game of the week: Michigan (2-3) vs. Toledo (1-4).

* Rout of the week: Cincinnati (4-1) over Rutgers (1-4).

* Dishonorable mention: Missouri accused Nebraska players of throwing footballs at them before their game. What Missouri didn’t realize is that Nebraska players are so wild they don’t know where their throws are going.
