Packers fan is caught on tape

Mathew Kowald’s 7-year-old son didn’t want to wear a Green Bay Packers jersey, and apparently that didn’t go over too well.

Kowald, 36, of Pardeeville, Wis., was cited for disorderly conduct after he restrained the child with tape for an hour and taped the Packers jersey onto the boy Saturday during the Packers’ divisional playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks, according to Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department.

Kowald’s wife, who later filed a restraining order, took pictures of the incident with her cellphone, and they were used as evidence to arrest and charge her husband.

It’s probably a good thing the Packers won.

Trivia time

New York Giants punter Jeff Feagles, who has played in an NFL-record 320 consecutive games, will be playing in his first conference championship game Sunday against the Green Bay Packers and, at 41, will become the third-oldest player to appear in a conference championship game. Who are the two oldest?

Seinfeld gets sacked

WLUK TV, a Fox affiliate in Green Bay, has pulled the Saturday night rerun of Seinfeld because the show is a favorite of New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

In a video posted on the station’s website, sports anchors said they expect Manning to be in his hotel room by 5:30 p.m., the time the episode was supposed to air.

“We do not want to give any comfort to the enemy whatsoever when they come into town,” said Jay Zollar, the station’s general manager.

Road runners

The Giants are making extra efforts to hide out in their team hotel near Green Bay, including posting extra security guards on each floor, according to Jay Sorgi of WTMJ-AM in Milwaukee.

The players will also register under assumed names to avoid unwanted phone calls, and Sorgi points out that pro athletes sometimes choose names of cartoon characters.

“So,” Sorgi wrote on the radio station website, “if you call the hotel and ask for Daffy Duck, don’t be shocked if Giants quarterback Eli Manning answers the phone.”

Slam dunk candidate

Barack Obama may be collecting a few extra votes from parents of the basketball players at Bishop Manogue High in Reno.

Obama’s campaign this week in Nevada has forced the teams from Bishop Manogue and Elko highs to reschedule a game, saving Bishop Manogue from playing on consecutive days in cities five hours apart.

The Miners were scheduled to play Friday at Elko, which is almost 300 miles away, and then play a home game the next day.

But because Obama is holding a rally at the Elko High gym on Friday, the game there was rescheduled for today, giving Bishop Manogue a day off after spending 10 hours on the road.

Bad call

A Scottish soccer player who was found drunk and asleep in his car in the middle of a highway offered every player’s favorite excuse -- he blamed the referee.

“I recognise (sic) that footballers are role models and that, as such, they should set a positive example. On this occasion, I have failed to do that,” Rob Malcolm wrote in an apology posted on the Queens Park Rangers website.

“But I must say that I was very upset and frustrated with the poor performance of the referee in our match at Plymouth the evening before.”

Trivia answer

George Blanda of the Oakland Raiders was 48 when he played in the 1976 AFC title game and John Carney of the New Orleans Saints was 42 when he played in the NFC title game last year.

And finally

Richard Hamilton of the Detroit Pistons had a season-high 39 points on 16-of-22 shooting Tuesday night against the Toronto Raptors, doing much of his damage from a corner that soon might be renamed Park Place or Boardwalk.

“That’s my real estate in the corner,” he said. “It’s like Monopoly. I’ve got four houses and a hotel on there. It’s what I do.”
