P.J. Walker threw four touchdowns passes and ran for a score, freshman Jager Gardner had a 94-yard scoring run on Temple’s second play, and the 23rd-ranked Owls defeated Southern Methodist, 60-40, Friday night in Dallas.

Gardner had zero yards rushing for the season when he broke through the middle of the line for the longest run in Temple history and a quick boost coming off a high-profile 24-20 loss to No. 8 Notre Dame at home.

Temple (8-1, 5-0 American Athletic) scored its most points in a game since beating Holy Cross, 63-34, on Sept. 29, 1973.

Former Weber State player Devin Pugh filed a federal lawsuit against the NCAA alleging it violates antitrust laws by forcing players to sit out a year after transferring. Pugh says his scholarship was not renewed following the 2012 season and the NCAA denied a hardship waiver that would have allowed him to transfer and play right away for another Football Bowl Subdivision program. . . .
