Kings to go into Tuesday’s home opener without Drew Doughty

Those were a costly few seconds in Philadelphia.

Flyers rookie forward Zac Rinaldo managed to take out Drew Doughty, the Kings’ top defenseman, and Dustin Penner, one of their top six forwards, in one first-period flurry. Rinaldo could have probably glared at someone and caused another injury the way things were going.

Doughty will sit out the Kings’ Staples Center opener Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues. He has an injured right shoulder, and the severity of the injury has not been fully disclosed. The Kings are saying he could be out at least seven to 10 days.

Rookie Slava Voynov will take Doughty’s place in the lineup. He will be paired with Willie Mitchell. It will be Voynov’s NHL debut, and Kings Coach Terry Murray expects him to play “big minutes.”

Doughty is not the Kings’ only concern. Penner left the ice about 20 minutes into practice Monday morning in El Segundo and was scheduled to have his injured knee examined by a team doctor.

Murray was told earlier that it was a bruise, which Penner suffered in the game at Philadelphia on Saturday, a 3-2 overtime win by the Kings.

“The plan was a full practice and there was nothing before the practice to lead me to think that it was going to be anything different than that,” Murray said. “Obviously, it’s bothering him and he’s been reassured by the doctor in Philadelphia and the training staff here. But something is on his mind, so we sent him to our team doctor.”

Penner suffered the injury when he took on Rinaldo, who had leveled Doughty with the hard check early in the first period.

Murray was asked his opinion of the hit on Doughty after he viewed it on tape.

“I thought it was a hockey hit,” Murray said. “You know, you’ve got a player coming into the offensive zone with the puck, and [Doughty] got a glimpse of him I think at the last second…. I didn’t think that [Rinaldo] launched himself. He seemed to hit him straight on. It’s just a hockey play.”
