NHL owners, union still apart on money

Defining the hockey-related revenue that would be split between players and owners in the next labor agreement remained a sticking point between the NHL and the players’ union, which met Wednesday in New York to discuss the league’s latest proposal. Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players’ Assn., said the union will present a response Thursday or Friday after it studies the effect the league’s plan would have on each club.

The NHL’s six-year proposal is a year longer than its initial proposal and would peg players’ share of hockey-related revenue in the first year at 46%, up from its initial proposal of 43%. However, the NHL wants to exclude some revenue, which would give players their share from a smaller pie. Players last season got 57% of hockey-related revenue. The current collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15.

Gary Bettman, commissioner of the NHL, told reporters that players have no “entitlement” to 57% of revenue and cited recent labor agreements in the NBA and NFL in which players took smaller shares of revenue.

The Ottawa Senators signed forward Kyle Turris to a $17.5-million, five-year contract extension.

The 23-year-old Turris scored 12 goals and 17 assists last season, both career highs.

Walton to work for Pac-12 Networks

Hall of Fame member Bill Walton is joining the new Pac-12 Networks as a color analyst who will work select college basketball games this season.

Walton returns to broadcasting after a two-year hiatus to deal with back problems. He’ll also work as an ESPN analyst.

The Pac-12 Networks said Wednesday that it will televise 150 live men’s basketball games this season, including eight conference tournament games. Every home conference game will be televised for the first time in league history. Last year, more than 90 league games weren’t on TV.

The San Diego Padres announced that Alfredo Harp Helu is an investor in the club’s new ownership group led by the Seidler/O’Malley families and Ron Fowler. Harp is believed to be the only member of a Major League Baseball ownership group who is a citizen of Mexico.

Harp, a businessman and philanthropist, has owned the Mexico City Red Devils baseball team since 1994, and is the club’s chairman. He is also chairman of Grupo Marti, SAB de CV, a position he has held since acquiring control of the group in 2008. The company is engaged in selling sports items with more than 200 outlets and operations of fitness centers.

Tilde beat Awe’Some Kitten by three-quarters of a length in the $150,000 Generous Portion Stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Tilde ran six furlongs in 1:11.42 and paid $5.20, $3.40 and $2.60 as the 8-5 favorite for breeder-owner-trainer Mike Harrington. Bejarano earned his 11th stakes win at the seaside track.

Swingman Martell Webster signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Wizards.

Webster played with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season, averaging 6.9 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Bayern Munich completed the signing of Spain midfielder Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao in the most expensive transfer in the 50-year history of the Bundesliga.

The defensive midfielder cost $50 million, far exceeding the previous most expensive transfer.
