Jimmy Walker wins for first time on PGA Tour

Jimmy Walker finally won on the PGA Tour in his eighth year and 188th tournament, and with a little help from Brooks Koepka.

Tied for the lead with four holes to play Sunday, Walker rolled in a six-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole to take the lead for good in the Frys.com Open at San Martin, Calif. Three closing pars for a five-under-par 66 turned out to be more than enough for the 34-year-old Texan to take home a trophy and plenty of perks.

Walker is going to the Masters for the first time, and he also cracked the top 50 for the first time in his career.

“I think it will sink in after a while,” Walker said. “Relief right now. It feels really good. I’m pretty excited.”

It was a sinking feeling for Koepka, whose journey around the world in a remarkable year nearly ended with a PGA Tour card.

Lexi Thompson won the LPGA Malaysia by four strokes, giving the 18-year-old American her first victory of the season and second on the LPGA Tour.

Thompson finished at 19-under 265 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. She also won the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic 2011 in Alabama.

Chinese star Shanshan Feng, the Reignwood LPGA Classic winner last week in China, was second after a 67. Second-ranked Suzann Pettersen (70) and Ilhee Lee (73) tied for third at 12 under.

Russ Cochran holed a five-foot putt on the final hole for his fourth consecutive birdie and a one-stroke victory over David Frost in the SAS Championship at Cary, N.C.

The 54-year-old Cochran, also the 2010 winner at Prestonwood Country Club, closed with a five-under 67 to finish at 17-under 199. The left-hander won the Principal Charity Classic in June in Iowa. He has five Champions Tour victories after winning once on the PGA Tour.

Frost finished with a 66. He missed a short birdie putt on No. 17 and also settled for par on 18.

Kirk Triplett was third at 14 under after a 68.

England’s David Lynn won the Portugal Masters for his second European Tour title, shooting an eight-under 63 to overcome a six-stroke deficit at Vilamoura.

The 39-year-old Lynn finished at 18-under 266.

England’s Paul Waring, the third-round leader, had a 71 to finish a stroke back along with South Africa’s Stephen Gallacher (66) and Austria Bernd Wiesberger (67).

South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel won the China Masters at Nanshan, closing with a four-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Darren Clarke and 2012 winner Liang Wenchong.

Schwartzel, the 2011 Masters winner, had a nine-under 279 total.

Clarke and Liang shot 72.

Djokovic gets sweep in China

Novak Djokovic maintained his dominance in China by holding off Juan Martin del Potro, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3), to capture a second Shanghai Masters title and extend his winning streak in the country to 20 consecutive matches.

The Serb completed a back-to-back sweep of titles at the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters for the second straight year. He has now earned seven titles overall in China — the most he has won in any country.

Top-seeded Angelique Kerber won her first WTA title of the season and third overall by defeating former two-time champion Ana Ivanovic, 6-4, 7-6 (6), in the Generali Ladies at Linz, Austria.

Samantha Stosur of Australia rallied from a set down to beat Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and win her second Japan Open title at Osaka.

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka but will have to wait to secure a fourth straight Formula One title as nearest rival Fernando Alonso finished fourth.

Vettel surged into the lead on the 41st lap and led a Red Bull one-two ahead of teammate Mark Webber by 7.1 seconds. Webber, who started from pole position, passed Lotus’ Romain Grosjean on the penultimate lap. Grosjean led much of the race but could not take his maiden F1 victory and finished third.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will rebuild the outdoor basketball courts at the sites of three schools destroyed in the May 20 tornado in Moore, Okla.

The NBA team said before its Blue and White Scrimmage at Westmoore High School that it will rebuild courts at Briarwood Elementary, Plaza Towers Elementary and Highland East Junior High School, complete with Thunder branding, through its Thunder Cares Foundation.
